Redeemed from the Curse of Poverty, Sickness & Spiritual Death

Main Scripture Reference

Galatians 3:13

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written: Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed.

Galatians 3:14

The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:29

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.

What is the Curse of the Law? (Listed Under Deut 28)

The Law refers to the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible. As we go back to these books or the law, we find that the curse or punishment for breaking God’s Law is threefold: POVERTY, SICKNESS & SPIRITUAL DEATH.

Redemption from the Curse of Poverty

According to Deuteronomy 28:17-17, 38-40, the curse of the poverty was to come upon God’s children if they disobeyed Him. It was a curse that would come upon them because they failed to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes.

Abraham’s Blessing is ours

Abraham’s blessing was a threefold blessing. The first thing God promised Abraham was that He was going to make him rich (Genesis 13:2). Abraham was very rich in cattle, silver and gold. What does the word rich mean? It means a full supply or abundantly provided for. “Praise God, there is a full supply in Christ”. (Phil 4:19)

Money is not the root of all evil. 1Timothy 6:10 says, “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” You could be guilty of that sin and not have a dime. It is not wrong to have money; it’s wrong for money to have you.

The Bible says that the silver and gold are Gods (Hag 2:8). The Bible says that the cattle on a thousand hills are Gods (Psalm 50:10). Why did God put all these things here? It’s for his children, you and me!

Redemption from the Curse of Sickness

Deuteronomy 28: 15-22, 27-29, 35, 58-61

We can readily see from these scriptures that sickness is a curse of the Law! According to verse 61, every sickness & disease is part of the punishment for breaking God’s Law.

When God’s people broke His commandments, they no longer were under His divine protection. All He could do was permit the devil to bring those afflictions upon them. Their sin and wrongdoing brought those dreadful plagues upon them.

Is Sickness a Blessing or a Curse?

God’s Word declares it is a curse. Disease & Sickness are enemies of Mankind. Sickness and Disease rob people of happiness, health and money, which are needed for other things.

Sickness: Is it God’s Will? (Matthew 8)

Sickness and disease are not the will of God for His people. He does not want a curse to be upon His children because of their disobedience. He wants to bless them with Health! (OT Verses: Exodus 15:26, 23:25, Pro 4:20-22, Psalms 107:20, 103:3)

Hebrews 8:6 states that we have a better covenant.

Luke 13 states that healing belongs to Abraham’s children.

Acts of the Apostles 10:38 states that Jesus healed all people who were oppressed of the devil.

Health and Healing are the will of God for Mankind. There is no sickness in Heaven.

Matthew 8:17 is a fulfillment of Isaiah 53:4.

1Peter 2:24 is a fulfillment of Isaiah 53:5.

Redemption from the Curse of Spiritual Death

The first curse of breaking God’s Law was Spiritual Death – Genesis 2:17. Genesis 3:22-24 tells us man disobeyed God, was driven from the Garden, and could eat no longer of the tree of life. He became the slave of sin and death.

The Bible tells us that physical death is an enemy of God and men. 1Corinthians 15:26 tells us that physical death is the last enemy that shall be put underfoot.

Three Kinds of Death

  1. Spiritual Death
  2. Physical Death
  3. Eternal Death or Second Death

John 3 – Jesus tells Nicodemus about being born again.

Luke 16 – Lazarus and the Rich Man

John 8:44 – By default, we are all children of the devil. We need to be born into God’s family to be saved. Our conduct and good works cannot save us!

Man is lost today not because of what he does, but because of what he is. Man needs life from God because he is spiritually dead. Thanks be to God; Christ has redeemed us from spiritual death.

John 10:10, John 5:24, Ephesians 2:1, 2:8,9, Romans 8:14-16
